Synopsis of the Movie
We are in Italy, during the First World War. Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver, and English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley meet and fall in love. However, Major Rinaldi, Frederic’s friend, jealous of the two, manages to transfer Catherine to Milan. When he is wounded, the lieutenant ends up in the very hospital where Catherine works. They rekindle their romance, but Frederic has to return to the front. Catherine sends him letters, however Major Rinaldi does not allow them to meet their destination, which causes Catherine to conclude that Frederic has already forgotten her. As the Armistice approaches, Frederic sets out to find her.

Movie review

The first adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s book about the romance between an American soldier and an English nurse during World War I. A bit old-fashioned for today’s viewers, the film retains its charm for fans of old Hollywood and Gary Cooper’s impossible sobriety. King Vidor filmed the same story in 1957, starring Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones.
